EDITOR'S NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I again apologize for the late arrival of this issue. I was out of commission for several weeks with back problems. I had an operation to remove a bad disc, and I'm now at home recuperating, so finally have some time to work on this newsletter. Very little new material has arrived since the last issue. Nor have I made any research trips during that time. So this issue may be a little skimpy on new data. I don't recall if I ever told you readers anything about myself. I am 41 years old. I am married to Nancy (Dante) Bennison and have two daughters, Sarah, 12, and Emily, 9. I hold a BA and MS in Math, and an MS and PhD in Computer Science. I work as a software engineer for Digital Equipment Corporation. I have several other hobbies, including amateur radio (call NO1I), photography, stamp collecting, and books (I collect P.G. Wodehouse and Thurber among other things). I'm related to the Loops through Henry Loop (1829-1911) of Chautauqua County, NY. I don't know who his parents were, though my best guess is that he descends from Richard Henry Loop, or possibly from Andrew Loop. Subscription rates are $15 for one year, four issues July, October, January and April. The next volume will be Numbers 17 through 20. If you are retired on a fixed income and would find the $15 to be a hardship, you may subscribe for $5, as in the past. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1989 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* First Natives - The Family of Ensign Henry Loop of New York Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1989] Henry LOOP [Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Schagticoke, NY, was born in New York State, about 1740. There is no primary evidence that Ensign Hendrick was Christian's son, but there is much convincing circumstantial evidence to that effect: (a) There is no evidence that there was any other Loop family in the country in 1740. (b) Among his children's names were: Martin, Peter, John, Maria, and Catherine, all names of his aunts and uncles assuming he is Christian's child. His other children were named: Henry, Nelly, Andrew, Joanna, Elizabeth, and Rachel. They were named for himself, his wife, his wife's father, mother, and two sisters. (c) He served in Hogeboom's Company of Militia around 1760, the same company that in 1767 saw a Peter Loop and John Loop as enlistees, almost certainly Christian Lupp's sons Peter and John. (d) Sponsors at the baptism of one of his children are Jacob Hoagteling and his wife Jannetje Loop, Christian Lupp's daughter. (e) Capt. Peter Loop, Mary (Loop) Kilmer, Catherine (Loop) Denny, and Hendrick's wife's parents were all attending the same church at Claverack, NY, at about the time that Hendrick married there. According to a muster record of Hogeboom's Company of militia, April 25, 1760, Hendrick was "a blonde lad of 20, from Fishkill." Some have interpreted this to mean that he was born in Fishkill, but no Loop's ever show up in any Fishkill parish registers. He is further described as a labourer, 5 ft 10 3/4 inches tall, light brown hair and blue eyes. Henry LOOP married Eleanor (called Nelly) SHARP (or SCHERP) around 1762. She was the daughter of Andries Andreisse SCHERP and Johanna FREER and was born about 1742 in NY. Soon after this marriage, Henry Loop and Nelly moved north along the Hudson River. They apparently settled first near Albany, family tradition says it was in Renssaelaerwyck, an area just south of Albany, on the east side of the Hudson, owned by Killian Van Rensselaer, patroon. According to tradition Henry Loop had a lease of land there at a rental of one cow per year, for "as long as timber grows or water flows", a typical lease of that day. Before June, 1765, however, they had moved to Stillwater, NY, just across the river from Schagticoke, the parish where all but one of their known children were baptized. Henry's sister Janet (LOOP) HOAGTELING apparently came along with her family. Family tradition says that Henry's farm in Stillwater lay so near the scene of the battle of Saratoga that it had to be evacuated very hurriedly with all sheep, cattle and family belongings on the day of that battle. Henry's son John Loop, later of Freetown, who was then seven years, eight months of age said he distinctly remembered bringing up the rear when the family moved out of this area, on the back of an old family horse. On April 4, 1778, Henry was commissioned an Ensign in Col. Van Woert's regiment of Albany County militia. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Skenesborough (now Whitehall) March 7, 1780. He was imprisoned at Quebec. He was released November 24, 1782. He received as pay from the State of New York on July 11, 1785, 301 pounds, 4 shillings, and 10 pence; also a piece of pine timber land in "Jessup's Patent" in the town of Luzerne, Warren County, NY. Family tradition has it that while in Canada he managed a gentleman's estate at Green Bay, (wherever that is), and that when released, his employer gave him six ruffled shirts and a pony to ride home. The family apparently moved to the grant in Warren County (then part of Washington County) around 1786. There they were censused in Queensbury township in 1790, and again in 1800, but have not been found in later censuses. Family tradition says a granddaughter, Avis Loop Wayle, who died in 1904 at the age of 92 years, remembered her grandfather, Ensign Henry Loop, and his visits to his son in Freetown at a very advanced age. If this is true, then he did not die before about 1820 at the earliest. It is not known where either he or his wife died. The children of Ensign Henry LOOP and his wife Eleanor SHARP, all but the first christened in Schagticoke, NY, were: + 1. Martin LOOP, bpt. June 4, 1763 in Albany, NY, m. Mary HULL. + 2. Andrew LOOP, b. June 3, 1765, m. (1) Susannah BEECH, m. (2) Anne HOOKER, d. about 1856. + 3. Peter H. LOOP, b. August 7, 1767, m. Rebecca GILBERT, d. June 9, 1855. 4. Joanna LOOP, b. November 28, 1770, m. (1) Jacob FRIDAY, m. (2) Solomon JONES. + 5. John LOOP, b. February 27, 1771, m. (1) Mary (Polly) EGGLESTON, m. (2) Avis FISHER, d. October 1, 1862. 6. Mary (Polly) LOOP, b. September 22, 1775, m. June 30, 1794, at Schuylerville, Saratoga county, NY, John MILLER. 7. Elizabeth (Betsy) LOOP, b. April 2, 1778, m. about 1797, Peter SHAFT. She d. after 1830. 8. Henry LOOP (twin), b. August 9, 1780. May have died young. 9. Rachel LOOP (twin), b. August 9, 1780. May have died young. 10. Eleanor (Nelly) LOOP, b. February 14, 1784, m. Rev. William CAMERON. She d. about 1876. 11. Catherine LOOP, b. April 22, 1785, m. Lewis CAMERON. [Note: Eventually the following paragraphs will each be expanded into their own sections.] The first child of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP was Martin LOOP. He was born in 1763, and was christened June 4, 1763 at the reformed church in Albany. He married, September 29, 1782, Mary HULL at Schagticoke. She was born about October 27, 1761, based on the age given in her tombstone inscription. Their first two or three children were born in Schagticoke, but sometime between 1784 and 1788 they removed to Washington county, perhaps settling first in Hebron, but ending up in Lake Luzerne (then called Fairfield). Martin died sometime between 1810 and 1820. He is last censused in Oneida County in 1810. According to family tradition he worked as a stone mason on the Erie Canal, which was built between 1817 and 1825. This tradition fits well with his residence in Oneida county. Widow Mary Loop is censused in Otsego county in 1820. She died June 13, 1846, in Otsego, Otsego county at the home of her son-in-law, Buckingham Fitch, and is buried at the Fitch Cemetery in Fly Creek. They had 13 children. The second child of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP was Andrew LOOP. He was christened on June 15, 1765 in Schagticoke. He married first, about 1790, Susannah BEECH. Their first child was christened in Schagticoke in 1787. They were still there in 1790, but by 1791 they had removed to Schoharie, Schoharie county, where they remained long enough to have five children. Between 1797 and 1800 they removed to Luzerne Lake, Washington county. It is likely that Susannah died there about 1805. Her last child was born in 1802, but we do not know where. Andrew married second to Anna HOOKER of Cherry Valley, Montgomery county, NY. She was born about 1781 in NY. We know very little else about her, nor much about the six children she had by Andrew. They were censused in 1810 in Saratoga County, but in 1820 they were censused in Onondaga county where they settled permanently. We do not know when she died. He died about 1856 in Clay, Oneida county, NY. The third child of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP was Peter LOOP. He was born on August 7, 1767 and christened at Schagticoke. He married about 1790, possibly at Schoharie, Rebecca GILBERT. She was born about 1772. Their first child was born in 1792 in Hadley, Saratoga county, NY. In 1800, they are censused in Washington county. In 1810, he may be the Peter censused in Montgomery county, NY, although they had a child in Schoharie in 1813. Family tradition says they moved to Ohio shortly after the War of 1812, in which he served. By the 1820 census, they had settled in Clermont county, Ohio. Around 1828 they removed to Perrysburg, Wood county, Ohio. There Rebecca died April 9, 1841 and is buried in the cemetery there. Between 1830 and 1840 Peter moved to Woodville, Sandusky county. Ohio. He died there June 9, 1855 and is buried in at the cemetery in Woodville. His inscription reads: Peter Loop, Jr., Pvt NY Militia, Rev War, 1766 - 1855 But this stone was clearly erected long after his death, probably by some organization, and the information on the stone is highly suspect. The fifth child of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP was John LOOP. He was born on February 27, 1771 and christened in Schagticoke. He married first, by 1793, Mary (Polly) EGGLESTON. She died near 1800. That year John is censused in Washington county, where their two daughters, Mary, who died young, and Hannah, were probably born. He married second, before 1809, Avis FISHER. She was born February 1, 1775, according to the age on her tombstone. Family tradition says her family lived 16 miles from the scene of the Battle of Saratoga, and her mother died the day of this battle for lack of medical attention, the surgeons all being busy at the scene of the battle. She was brought up by her grandfather, John Fisher. Family tradition has it that John Loop met with financial reverses and, about 1809, moved his family to German, Chenango county, NY. He is censused there in 1810. The family story is that for the move they had their belongings in two covered wagons. The first was drawn by horses and in it rode Avis Fisher LOOP and her young child, Polly. The second wagon, hauled by an ox team, was driven by the elder daughter Hannah. After the birth of another daughter in German, the family came on to Freetown, Cortland county, NY. For a time John Loop returned each year to his "former home" to earn money, which was hard to come by in Cortland county then. Daughter Hannah would sometimes be left alone for months to take care of the homestead. One evening the latch string was pulled, and four indians walked in. In sign language they asked for food, which she prepared for them. That night they slept in a circle on the floor of the cabin. They left after breakfast, without harming her. Another time, while her parents were absent in the east some months, Hannah spun and wove the material for a new linsey-woolsey suit for her father, and cut and made the garments. On his return, her father was delighted with the suit and asked what he could give her in return. She asked for some meat which she hadn't had in awhile. So he went to hunt for a deer, wearing the new suit. He shot a large buck, only wounding it. The buck charged him, and he dodged behind a small maple tree, grasping the horns of the buck with each hand, with the tree between them. In the ensuing struggle, which the deer lost, the suit was cut and blood-stained in many places. John Loop's second wife, Avis, died January 13, 1861, probably in Freetown. She had born him three children. John Loop died October 1, 1862, in Freetown. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++VITAL DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. Concerning the tombstone of Peter H. Loop and its questionable data, a friend of mine recently sent me the following from the "Index to the Grave Records of Servicemen of the War of 1812, State of Ohio" compiled 1988 by the Ohio Society of United States Daughters of 1812. Loop, Peter Jr; Private, b. 1766; d. 1855; bur: Old Cem., Woodville, Sandusky, Ohio. [m. Rebecca Gilbert]. descendants have army discharge papers. Year of entry: 1943. My friend says that the book contains on soldiers whose descendants have joined the Society. She says the original application form can be obtained from: Genealogy Division of the State Library of Ohio 65 South Front Street Columbus, Ohio 43215 They need to know the name, year of entry, and there is a small fee. If anyone obtains this before I do please send me a copy. 2. Mary Ellen Schroeder, 114 Jahnke Ave, Waverly, Iowa 50677, asks what we know about Ephraim Loop of Onondaga County, New York. She says that her information is that he was born in that county on 16 SEP 1846, and died in Delaware county, IA in 1928 and that his parents were born in Vermont. She says there were also a Hiram Loop who married a Rosanna Peak or McPeak, and a Norman Loop who married a Charlotte. Mary Ellen, here are the Loop entries from the 1850 census of Onondaga county, Clay Township: Lewis Loop age 32 carpenter born NY Albert Loop age 10 born NY ? Loop age 8 female born NY ? Loop age 21 female born NY Andrew Loop age 86 pauper born NY Ann Loop age 69 born ? Hiram Loop age 7 born NY Susan Loop age 28 born NY -----> Hiram Loop age 28 born NY Rhoda Loop age 38 born NY -----> Norman Loop age 15 born NY Rhoda M.Loop age 11 born NY Martin Loop age 26 farmer born NY Martin Loop age 48 carpenter born NY Hannah Loop age 40 born ? George Loop age 21 boatman born NY Betsy Loop age 18 born NY Henry Loop age 14 born NY -----> Ephraim Loop age 6 born NY [some non-Loops] Henry Loop age 21 born NY Your Ephraim is shown as the son of Martin Loop and Hannah (Woodard) His age may be wrong, but censuses are notoriously inaccurate. His mother, Hannah Woodard, was born in Vermont, though his father, Martin Loop was not. The relationship among Hiram, Norman, Rhoda, and Rhoda M., above is not clear, though Hiram is supposedly a son of Andrew by his second wife. Do you know how Hiram, Norman and Ephraim were related? Have you sent for Ephraim's death certificate? That should show the names of his parents. If you obtain it, please send me a copy of it. Did Norman and Hiram also live in Iowa? Note that Ephraim is a descendant of Ensign Henry Loop, featured in this issue. So if you find your relationship to Ephraim, we can get you all the way back to Anthony Lupp in 16th century Germany. 3. Last June Vola Carter wrote (your letter just surfaced on my desk, sorry) saying she was tracking an Ephraim Loop who is buried in Hopkinton, Delaware, IA. Vola, did you ever receive the Civil War pension records for him? If you did (or when you do) please send me a copy. It appears that Ephraim is not a close relative of your Almond. 4. Concerning the question of the marriage of Sarah Birney to Peter Loop, Jr., Ross Roby sent in this section from p. 380 of the "History of Bradford County, Pennsylvania": Henry Birney was for a number of years a prominent man in the neighborhood where he lived [in Standing Stone, PA]. ... He had one son and five daughters. ... Of the daughters, Sarah married Capt. Peter Loop, one of the commissioners of the Susquehanna company, and whose name is affixed to many of their grants. In order to avoid what seemed to be an endless dispute about titles, he moved first to Elmira (Newtown), then up the Cohocton, above Painted Post, where he was an influential citizen. Rebecca married Peter Matthews, and moved to Belvidere, Ill. ... 5. Peggy Corbin claims that the John Roush who was born to John Jacob Roush and Mary Elizabeth or Barbara Elizabeth Wittenmeyer in 1774 died at age 92 in Liverpool, Perry County, PA. If this is true, then he cannot be the John Rouse who was the "son" of Christian Loop of Delaware County, Ohio. Nonetheless, the presence of Christian Loop with at least two Roush families in Northumberland county convinces me that this is the Christian who later lived in Delaware County. 6. Marilyn Loop - please tell Peggy Corbin that she has gotten the will and grantee deed records for Westmoreland county mixed in with the Northumberland county material, at least in the report she sent you. 7. Garold Loop - I was glad to receive a letter from you around about Christmas. I hadn't heard anything from you in a long time. I'm sorry to hear that you are unable to continue recording family information. Your efforts have been very important in bringing together the many branches of the family and tying them together. 8. Jim Fry - This business about Martin Loop's (son of Capt. Peter) wife being called Suka or Susa has always bothered me. Note in the Copake parish records (vital data #2 above) it would appear that Catherine had a sister Susanna. The sponsor Susanna Van Deusen, after whom the child is named, is almost certainly a sister of Catherine, and Malcar is probably a brother. So why would Catherine be called Susa, or even Suka? Two possibilities come to mind: (1) Catherine died and Martin married her sister. This was common back then. (2) The daughter was called Susa or Suka and became confused with the mother. But we may never know. 9. Something I hadn't noticed before in the same Copake records is the presence of a Jane Loop as sponsor, in the same church in which Peter Loop (Capt. Peter) is a sponsor. This is surely his daughter called Jenny in his will. It adds a small amount to the argument that Jane Loop, born in Hillsdale, who married Jonathan Andrus was Peter's daughter Jenny. 10. Marilyn Loop - if you are ever in Washington, DC, go to the Archives and look over the complete file on your Henry Loop (son of George). When you ask for them by mail they only select certain records. The file may contain Nancy Ann's maiden name, as many pension application forms or affidavit forms required that information. 11. I'm including a family group sheet for Christian Loop, of Delaware County, Ohio, in this issue. I finally obtained the wills of this Christian Loop and his "son" John Rouse. They are contained in the family group sheet notes. It is a good example of how important it is to get the original. The abstract of Christian's which has been circulating says he mentions Sons: George Loop and John Rouse; Daughter: Grace Filkey; Granddaughter: Catherine Rouse. In fact, the order in which they are mentioned is as follows with the bequests shown: son: John Rouse - 30 acres granddaughter: Catherine Rouse - 30 acres and a heifer daughter: Grace Felkey - 30 acres and an iron pot son: George Loop - rest of farm land, about 16 acres residue to be divided among the above four heirs. This makes a real big difference. First, it implies a probable birth order of the children. Second, to me it says that Catherine Rouse is the daughter of a deceased (presumably adopted) son, not one of John Rouse's daughters. John Rouse's will tells us that he remarried after the death of his first wife Elizabeth. His second wife was named Abby, probably Abigail. 12. I'm fairly certain someone sent me a copy of the Loop epitath's from the Belvidere, IL, Cemetery. But I can't seem to find it anywhere. Ross Roby says it wasn't he who sent it. Does anyone have them? Maybe I'm dreaming. That would explain why I can't find it.
